Blind Contour FRIday 02

Niff

Sutter

We accidentally deleted (well I (niff)) accidentally deleted the text we had here, which also includes deleting all the extra links. I am pretty upset about this because it was the first really big BCF we had. Please accept my apologies.

Here are some other sites that decided to participate in our Blind Contour Friday:
Rachael Fowler, Bearskinrug, LaureLines, Kimlan Cornell, of Sock Monkey Drawer. and Wally Torta, lindsay Olsen, Callathump, There were a few more great links but thanks to my dumbness, they are lost forever.

Wow.
This is kinda depressing. I have no sense of where my hand is or was on the paper. I did my phone earlier today, nothing great, but I am participating, minus the posting. So, enjoy the thought of mine!
Great Job to both of you.

OMG,that is so incredible, Niff. HOW do you do these so well?? I know you said you've been doing them for a long time, but still... . The linework is ravishing, no other word for it. Sutter's is fantastic, too. Too much talent for one household. Not allowed.

I'm liking Kimlan Cornell's BC drawing, 'cause she didn't lift her pen. I was always taught that it was a more true way of doing blind contour, because although the eye seems to jump around as I draw, I notice that it still follows a path from one point to the other....so I let the pen record that path, and I don't stop till it's over...getting my whole arm into the action.

They're all lookin' pretty smooth though.

I've found that the more BC's you do, the less of an issue patience is. It just becomes natural. Of course, mine still often look like ass. But luckily I like ass.

It shouldn't be depressing...your not looking for crying out loud!! hah.

Laura: If you think I'm good, you should see Shawn Barber, a friend of mine from college, we used to just sit around for hours and draw ourselves or eachother...that is really where I started doing it. Now I even incorporate BC's in my illustrations. It really is hit or miss with me, maybe I should post my more screwed up ones.
but thanks so much.

Junglerump: I love Kimlan's also, I used to do it all in one line, but I have been doing them so long I wanted to add shading, so I started seeing how could I could get if i lifted a bit. I really don't lift my pen except for that though. My lines are all lightly connected usually.

both of yours look quite impressive. i cannot figure out what the whole thing with the blind contour portrait theme is this week, but it's neat to get to compare similar subjects.

i know you've been doing these for a long time niff, so i'm intrigued to hear what you feel you've learned from having done them for so long.

i agree with the whole patience thing though. after i did vanessa's face, i gave up trying to figure out how to tie everything else in without lifting my pen... it was driving me batty.

wow Niff! you do shading!!?? shading in blind contour!!?? that's not possible! except I see that you did and wow that's impressive!

and likewise Sutter, wow, especially the hair and detail you tried for, I love the surprize of the expression when I'm finished, with the "lower" lips your's is so sad :( !!

and no "maybe" about it, I'm in this week! Portrait from me too, had to do about 12 'cause I kept peeking (discarded those) agree, it is very hard not to look!

This is fun Niff, thanks!

Well CIN: I TRY to do shading, as you can see, it doesn't always work out! haah.

Seeks: Like I said, I have started incorporating the loose and" melty" feeling of BC's to my illustrations...AND, I find them to be a lot of fun and a great laugh if ever I'm stressed. It's more like blind contour therapy.

i have found that shading helps distinguish shadows and may help give form to something that would otherwise just be a bunch of stray lines. this is not to say that i do a whole lot of shading. it's hard enough for me to get a shape that's distinguishable. i've just noticed this by watching Niff. she actually doesnt look at the paper, i swear. its just sick.

Oh these are fab - they look like people rather than a dummy from the wax museum that has been stood too close to the radiator (that'll be my attempt). Also, I scared Sutter apparently - :)

hey! i did one too! :)

Callathump

I did one this week of my bulldog ... I just emailed you, Niff.
I can't even begin to fathom how to do shading, picking the pen up and then getting it down in the right place. That kind of expert pen handling boggles my mind. This was a lot of fun, I'll do it again.

I agree with, Cin.. holy crap, you did shading?! Nice work, nice work indeed.

I did some blind contours as well. This is a great project!

June 25th

You inspired me to try some blind contour but for some reason I thought I wasn't allowed to lift my pen from the paper so the drawing is very poor but I will try again next week.

Violet: basic BC drawing is not lifting your pen, that is what KIMLAN and BEARSKINRUG do, and their stuff looks brillian!

let us see next time!

Hi - I did one (or 2) at http://janeysjourney.com Now I'm going to look at everyone eleses and come back here. You've got a great blog.

I did a simple blind contour, nothing detailed, but still quite fun.

Thanks for inspiring us all!
